DETERMINATION OF THE BENEFITS AND COMPLICATIONS OF CLEAN INTERMITTENT CATHETERIZATION TO SPINAL CORD INJURED PATIENTS

Introduction: Intermittent catheterization (IC) is the best method for bladder emptying in patients with spinal cord lesions who are suffering from neurogenic dysfunction. The aim of study was to determine benefits using clean intermittent catheters injury at regular intervals daily empty and identify complications its use. Methods: A quantitative descriptive design done Ibn Al-Kuff hospital injuries Baghdad city, including (60) male injured 14th February 2021 20th April 2022. non-probability (purposive) sample cord-injured (SCI) paraplegia tetraplegia were selected. questionnaire format used, which consisted three major parts a total (of 26) items. Results: present included paraplegic tetraplegic patients, half them age group between (18-27) years old, 33 (55%) single. majority24 (40%) primary school graduates. Furthermore, 24 employees before they injured. Concerning clinical characteristics indicates that (48 (80%) 41(68.3%) complete paralysis 55(91.7%) cause Traumatic SCI. 51(85%) use selfclean catheterization; concerning number catheterizations, 33(55%) used it 7- more daily, while 34(56.7%) them, time catheter next each two hours. urinary complication occurs during last 3 months associated catheterization, 22(36.7%) had (UTIs). Conclusion: current has demonstrated practices about acceptable regular, beneficial as reduced complications, especially tract infections, noting need increase interval (4-6) hours period.
